The starting point of the Ruta Botánica is the Cortijo del Alcázar which is located about 5 kilometers from our place. The route is about 7 kilometers long and is very comfortable to do even for those not very used to hiking.

For a long way the route is accompanied by the Alcázar River, leaving in its path corners of great beauty, with small waterfalls and shady pools, in it paths alternate with a splendid forest and dirt track.

Walking thru the Chillar river (55 minutes) is a lovely stay-cool thing to do in the summer when it´s hot. The walk towards the river Chillar starts in Nerja and it is a medium level hike, although even the first pool is a little easier and suitable for more people.

El Torcal de Antequera

El Torcal de Antequera

El Torcal de Antequera (1h10) is a nature reserve in the Sierra del Torcal mountain range located south of the city of Antequerra. It is known for its unusual landforms, and is one of the most impressive karstlandscapes in Europa. The area was designated a Natural Site of National Interest in July 1929, and a Natural Park Reserve of about 17 square kilometres was created in October 1978.

Caminito del Rey

El Caminito del Rey (1,5 hours) is a walkway, pinned along the steep walls of a narrow gorge in El Chorro. The name derives from the original name of Camino del Rey (King's Pathway), abbreviated locally to el caminito. The walkway had fallen into disrepair and was partially closed for over a decade. After four years of extensive repairs and renovations, the walkway re-opened in 2015.

El Níspero Dulce

From Alhaurín El Grande it is 1h15 to the next address the beautiful country villa El Níspero Dulce in the village of Alcaucín, 25 minutes from the coast. Belgian-Dutch couple René and Kris will do everything to make your stay a pleasant and mouth-watering experience, especially with the jams prepared with the fruit of their own fruit trees from the huge garden surrounding the villa. This is also an ideal place for bird watching, being located at the edge of the Sierra Tejada Natural Park.

Cortijo La Haza

From Alcaucín it is 1h20 to get at your next stop:  Cortijo La Haza in Iznájar, one of the authentic white villages in Southern Córdoba. Your hostess Bernadette and talented chef Patriek will warmly welcome you. Together with their Spanish staff Carmen and Eli they will ensure your stay is wonderfully comfortable. The cortijo (farm) is about 10 km. from the village and is surrounded by olive groves as far as the eye can see. La Haza is ideally situated for trips to Córdoba, Priego de Córdoba and Antequera with the Torcal National Park. Granada with the world famous Alhambra is also within easy reach.

Action

The main protagonist of the route of Oil and Mountains is the olive tree, of the “verdial” variety, which is used to produce one of the finest olive oils. The route is also ideal for hiking and camping enthusiasts.

The house is in the most stunningly beautiful mountainous region and on the edge of the Sierra Tejeda National Park. The closest peak is La Maroma (2068m), the park and the area are the perfect place for trekking and cycling in the area.

The area

The city Vélez-Málaga (20 minutes) is the nearest city near the sea. Capital of La Axarquía, Vélez-Malaga, often simply referred to as Vélez, this city is the center of an agricultural region known for its avocados and mangoes.
The Alcazaba and the Ermita de la Virgen are set on a hill overlooking the city.

The village of Comares (45 minutes) is one of the highest pueblo blancos in Andalucía (739 meters above sea level), Comares can be spied for kilometers around, rising high above the surrounding countryside and resembling a natural extension to the craggy rock face.
From our garden, you can see the lights popping up during sunset.

The village of Nerja (45 minutes) has around 15 Km (small) beaches. In the center there are many shops and places to eat and last but not least the Balcón de Europe, a promenade made on a cliff with amazing views over the Mediterranean Sea.

- Close to Nerja, at the other side of the highway, you find Frigiliana. It is one of the most beautiful white village of Andalusia with a historical character and a lot of charm.

The village of Frigiliana (45 minutes) is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful villages in Andalusia. This village is a maze of cobbled streets, with well maintained whitewashed houses, that provide a stunning contrast against the blue skies and red slate roofs. The colourful plant pots brimming with lavender, bougainvillaea and jasmine all add an extra dash of colour to this enchanting scene.

The city of Alhama de Granada (45 minutes) can be reached through the Zafarraya pass and towards Granada. A delightful, total unspoilt little town with an amazing gorge (for walking … or just looking!). The hot springs (Balneario de Alhama) are 10 minutes away … swim in hot outside pool or take a treatment in the centre there.

Antequera (1 hour) is one of the oldest cities in Andalucía and often forgotten on the classical Andalucía tour circuit. Although, architecturally and historically very interesting place to visit because of the influences of the Roman, Moorish and Spanish periods.

The nature reserve Fuente de piedra (1h10) is situated in the northwest of the province of Málaga. With an area of 1300 hectares, is located in the village of Fuente de Piedra and belongs to the set of endorheic lakes in the area of Antequera. The lake shape is elliptical, with 2.5 km width and 6.7 km long.
The rain are the only water entering the system, divided between direct precipitation on the lake, surface runoff and underground supply. The only way out of the pond water evaporation occurs, which determines its closed or endorheic character.

Torre del Mar (25 minutes) is one of the main touristic resorts of the Costa del Sol. Located in the eastern part of the Coast, the town is the beach resort of Vélez-Málaga, capital of the Axarquia region. Torre del Mar has around four kilometers of sandy beaches lined with restaurants and bars.

One of the resort's most pleasant features is the extended esplanade which follows the coast to reach the Marina of Caleta de Vélez which offers, beside excellent seafood, sailing and a variety of other watersports.

Cantarriján Beach (50 minutes) is a small naturist beach, which can get pretty crowded during high season.  It is located in the Cerro Gordo Nature Area, about 8 km to the west of La Herradura.  You may access off of the N-340 coastal road and there are signs posted for the Cantarriján exit.  You may also access via the A-7 highway and take the La Herradura exit, then follow the N-340 west (towards Nerja) for about 8 km.

The city of Málaga (50 minutes) has undergone a complete revamp the last decade and the result is astounding. The art lovers can pay a visit to the Picasso Museum, the Carmen Thyssen museum collection or the Center Pompidou that opened in 2015.

You could stroll down into the historic center of Malaga arrive at the Plaza de la Constitución, where many of the city’s fiestas and events are held. It is also a great place for shopping!

The city has also a great range of bars and restaurants in the historic center. In the renovated harbor you find great cocktail bars, the “La Malagueta” district offers you a variety of beachside ‘chiringuitos’ selling fresh seafood.

The city of Granada (1h30) can be reached via the highway (140 Km) or inland (90 Km) by crossing the Zafarraya pass at 900m above sea level.

Granada is a treasure of architecture, with its city center with boulevards of handsome buildings of the 19th century, the old Moorish quarter Albaícin and the famous Alhambra. The Alhambra was once the residence of the Muslim rulers and consist of the Nazrid Palaces, the Alcazaba battlements and the patios and gardens of the Generalife. The city of Córdoba (2h) is sitting proudly on the banks of the Guadalquivir river. 

The UNESCO has recognized the historic center with the Mezquita and its Islamic and Jewish heritage. Visit also the gardens of the Alcázar located in the historic center next to  the Guadalquivir river. Famous is also the yearly colorful patio festival in May.

The city of Seville (2h30) is the capital city of Andalusia and occupies the valley of the Guadalquivir river.

The city is one large open-air museum where authentic Spanish elements are influenced by Moorish styles. It is the city where you find thousands of orange trees and where Flamenco was born. The houses are small but the colorful streets, squares and parks in the historic quarter are lively and busy. Seville is famous for the Alcázar of Seville, the Catedral of Seville, the Giralda, the Santa Cruz quarter and much much more…

We advise our guests to always book a rental car online in advance. This is to avoid disappointments and to avoid paying a too high price. Because as the rental period approaches and so the number of available cars decreases, prices generally increase significantly.
